Young Mr. Lincoln

Young Mr. Lincoln (1939)

Directed by John Ford, this film shows ten years in the life of the sixteenth president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, as he moves from Kentucky to Springfield, Illinois, to begin his legal career. (Lincoln does not have to go to law school but could practice if he passes the bar exam --- an interesting idea that opened up the law to people who, like Lincoln, could probably never have afforded to go to law school.) The film shows Lincoln defending two men accused of murder. Then, Lincoln agrees to enter politics.

Lincoln is well-portrayed in this movie by Henry Fonda, who wore specially-made boots to make him look taller. The movie is a bit dated, but is still well worth watching.
